The results of the recently held West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates, which took place between January and February 2022, have been issued by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
The announcement was made in a statement by Patrick Areghan, the chairman of WAEC Nigeria’s national office, and given by Moyosola Adeyegbe, the interim head of the public affairs section.
According to the statement, a total of 7,166 candidates took the exam across the country, with just 1,886 (or 26.32 percent) receiving credit pass or above in at least five topics, including English language and mathematics.
The number of people who registered for this year’s first series examination diet for private candidates fell by 4.85 percent, according to the report.
Out of the 7,166 candidates that took the exam, 2,835 (or 39.56%) received credit or above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
The body also stated that only 6,949 candidates (representing 96.97 percent) have their results fully processed and released, while 217 candidates (representing 3.03 percent) have a few of their subjects still being processed due to candidate errors, and that efforts are still being made to correct the errors and release those results.
Despite the fact that candidate performance in the exam this year was lower than in the previous two years, WAEC stated that the results should not be compared to those of the school-based exam, where up to 80% of all applicants had similar scores.
Candidates in the school-based WASSCE are required to sit for between eight and nine courses, but private candidates in the first and second series of the exam are free to appear for any number of subjects, even one, depending on their deficiency, according to the statement.
“As a result, it will not be true or fair to say that performance in this examination has diminished,” the statement said.
