Biography of John Legend

John Legend, a Grammy and Academy Award-winning musician, is well-known for his critically acclaimed albums “Get Lifted” and “Love in the Future.”

John Legend: Who Is He?

The musician and composer John Legend has collaborated with Alicia Keys, Twista, Janet Jackson, and Kanye West, among others. Get Lifted, Legend’s self-titled debut album from 2004, received three Grammy Awards. In 2010, he released Wake Up!, his joint album with the Roots, following the release of two more solo albums. Before releasing his subsequent album, 2013,’s Love in the Future, Legend also served as a coach on the TV program Duets. The musician and Common’s song “Glory,” from the 2014 movie Selma, won an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and a Grammy together. He later won an Emmy for his performance in the 2018 staging of Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert.

Childhood and Career

John Roger Stephens, better known as Legend, was born on December 28, 1978, in Springfield, Ohio. Legend was a young prodigy who learned to play the piano from his grandmother and grew up singing in the church choir. He continued his education by leading a coed a cappella group at the University of Pennsylvania. After graduating, he changed directions and began working for Boston Consulting Group, but he kept on performing in New York City nightclubs.

The young hip-hop artist Kanye West was immediately introduced to him, and the two musicians worked together on each other’s demos.

Personal and marital life

Legend is active in a wide range of civic and charity issues outside of music. He backs the Harlem Village Academies, a group that manages multiple charter schools in New York City. On the HVA board, Legend serves as vice-chairman.

He gave Black Enterprise magazine the following justification for why he places such a high value on education: “In the city where I’m from, between 40 and 50 percent of the students graduate from high school. I was the exception, having performed well in high school and attending an Ivy League institution. We must do more to guarantee that every child receives a top-notch education.”

Legend continued to support educational reform by contributing his song “Shine” to the 2010 film Waiting for Superman. The public education system in the country is examined critically in the movie.

While on vacation in the Maldives in late 2011, Legend proposed to model Chrissy Teigen. In Italy, they exchanged vows in September 2013. The couple gave birth to a daughter called Luna Simone on April 14, 2016. Miles Theodore Stephens, the second child, was born on May 16, 2018, and his arrival was announced.

Teigen’s baby bump was first shown in Legend’s “Wild” music video, which was released in August 2020, when Teigen and Legend revealed they were having their third child. After complications with the pregnancy, the couple lost their son, whom they named Jack, in September 2020.

Career Revolution: “Get Lifted”

Legend’s 2004 debut album Get Lifted, which featured the hit track “Ordinary People,” a song he initially wrote for the Black Eyed Peas, helped it achieve platinum status. For Get Lifted, he received three Grammy Awards: the best R&B album, the best R&B male vocal performance, and the best new artist. Once Again, Legend’s second album, was released in 2006.

Due to his musical talent, Legend is now a well-known figure. He appeared at the NBA All-Star Game, the Major League Baseball All-Star Game, and the Super Bowl XL in Detroit, Pittsburgh, and Detroit, respectively, in 2006.

Soon after, he issued a number of new albums, including Evolver (2008). One of André 3000’s collaborations, “Green Light,” was featured on Evolver. The album itself peaked at the top of the R&B/hip-hop charts, and this song turned out to be a small hit.

In the same year, Samuel L. Jackson and Bernie Mac’s comedy Soul Men gave Legend his first appearance in front of the cameras.
